Moving day is winding down and you are surrounded by boxes. Knowing how to unpack after moving might feel like a problem you can deal with later, but getting it right from the start makes a real difference in how quickly your new place feels like home.

What should you unpack first?
Start with your moving essentials kit. We talk about the Moving Essentials Kit a lot in our moving tips because it matters. These are the items you need during the move itself or on that first night: think phone charger, a change of clothes, toilet paper, and a few basic snacks. Keep this bag or box separate and accessible from the start.
Furniture before decor. Place your big pieces first. There is no point deciding where to hang a picture or set a lamp if you have not figured out where the couch goes. Get the furniture settled, then work inward from there.
Which rooms deserve attention right away?
Plants. House plants are fragile and do not do well sitting packed in a box. Get them out, give them light and water, and find their spots early.
Kitchen. You probably do not need the air fryer on day one. But having a couple of pots and pans accessible within the first day or two means you are not living entirely on takeout. Stock a few pantry basics as soon as you can so you have options.
Clothes. The longer clothes sit folded in boxes, the more they wrinkle. Unpacking them early also means you can change into something fresh, which matters more than it sounds after a long moving day.
Toiletries. Moving and settling in is physical work that can stretch over several days. Being able to shower, use your moisturizer, and put on fresh deodorant does a lot for how comfortable you feel in a new space.
