  • becoming a caregiver (e.g. for elderly parents)
  • saving money by cutting expenses

When moving back in with your parents (or one parent)…

…to take care of them

Taking care of a parent (or both of them) means a certain reversal of roles, and that might need some adjustment. The following points depend on your individual situation, i.e. on how much daily care your parent{s} might need and if your moving in is a temporary or potentially long-term situation.

“You cannot pour from an empty cup.” It’s a popular adage with a lot of truth in it. Therefore, keep in mind to not only be the caretaker but also take care of yourself. You can only be there for them if you keep up your own strength.

  • Look after your health.
  • Eat healthily and stay hydrated.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Consider relaxation practices to alleviate the physical as well as emotional stress
  • You might benefit from talking to people who know what you are going through and give emotional support as well as practical tips. Consider joining a caregiver support group (online or local).

If you can, try to share/delegate some of the responsibilities. Are there other family members who can share the workload, and be it only occasionally? Try to get them involved. Sometimes, a little help can go a long way:

  • grocery shopping
  • cooking a meal
  • doing some yard work
  • take them to the doctor
  • or simply staying with them so you can get out for a bit and take some time for yourself
