Tips for Moving a Player Piano

by | Sep 3, 2023

Moving, whether it be big or small, is a struggle in itself. It’s an even bigger challenge if what you’re moving is both bulky and has a lot of moving parts. That’s why a lot of people are apprehensive when it comes to moving a piano. You can easily damage the strings inside or break a key.

If you’re moving a piano, you can go about it in two ways. You can opt to do it yourself and perhaps get your friends to help you or seek out professionals to do it for you.

Tips From the Pros for Moving a Piano

If you want to go with the first option, then you first need to know how heavy it is, how far you have to transport it and the dimensions of all the passageways that it has to go through. To help make moving your piano easier for you, here are a couple of tips you could follow.

  • Ask for Help

A piano can weigh anywhere from 300 to a 1000 pounds. That means you need people to help you. No matter how strong you are, there is no way that you can get this piano from point A to point B while keeping yourself and your piano safe. You will need 4 to 5 people to help you. Make sure they don’t have a history of back injuries as this could make that worse. Together, you can plan out what each one is capable of doing to make the move easier.

  • Protect Yourself and Your Moving Team

Dress in clothing that will allow you to maneuver freely, but is not too far removed from your body that it could get caught. If you can, also try to wear gloves to help you grip the piano better. That can also help protect your hands, in case the piano slips are you’re lifting it. The same goes for everyone who will help you.

  • Cover the Piano and Clear the Path

Covering your piano up with cloth and securing it with tape, especially if it’s traveling a long distance, is a must. That’s the best way to make sure that it won’t get any dents and scratches. You also need to make sure that you can still grip the piano- even with the covering. To make sure you can move it easily, clear the path that it needs to go through before anyone starts lifting. This makes the duration that the piano is lifted up shorter.
