1. Consider your roommates
Do not move in at the same time as your roommate. A standard dorm room is small, and two families trying to unload furniture and boxes in the same space at the same time creates real problems. Find out who your roommate is, introduce yourself, and agree on move-in times before either of you shows up with a truck.
Also talk through shared items before you pack. A TV, microwave, and refrigerator take up space and cost money. If your roommate is already bringing a refrigerator, leave yours at home. That conversation saves you from hauling something you have no room for.
2. Must-have items when moving in
A few practical tools will save you a lot of frustration on move-in day. Pack a rubber mallet, cleaning supplies, scissors, wall mounting strips, trash bags, and a small cart for moving heavy boxes. The dorm front desk may have carts available, but they will be in high demand. Having your own means you are not waiting around.
3. Consider any allergies
Dorm mattresses are not the same as what you sleep on at home. If you have allergies, bring a pillow protector and a mattress cover. Most standard dorm beds are twin XL, so check that before you order anything online.
4. Clothing
Pack light at first. A dorm room does not have the closet space you are used to. If you are going home for breaks, use those trips to swap out seasonal clothing. Most campuses also have a shopping center nearby, and many provide transportation to get there. One thing worth calling out specifically: bring flip-flops for the community bathroom. You will want them.
5. Electronics
A laptop is not optional for most college students. If you do not have one, look into it before classes start. Some majors make it genuinely difficult to keep up without one. Along with the laptop, pack extension cords, a power strip, and headphones. If cost is a barrier, check with your school about borrowing programs, or look into rental options in your area.
