Is Moving for a Job the Right Step for You?

by | Sep 3, 2023

Depending on the career path you have chosen, moving for a job sometimes comes with the territory. Some people might be more flexible with relocating, especially when it leads to a step upwards in their careers. On the other hand, a move can also mean a significant change in living conditions, especially when it means a long-distance move. In many cases, such change impacts not only an individual, but the entire family, which can make the decision to move or not to move, much more difficult.

Thinking about moving for a job? Consider the many changes:

  • new colleagues and a new work environment
  • a new home and new surroundings
  • new neighbors and friends, i.e. a new social circle, potentially even a different culture/language

For some people, such changes might be welcome, maybe even an incentive to change jobs. They like the idea of a fresh start. On the other hand, the more established you are in your current community and other aspects of daily life, the more difficult it might be to leave these behind. In other words: The decision whether such a change in your circumstances is a good or not so good idea depends on many individual factors and can differ from person to person.

If you are a single person, this point might be relatively easy to determine – for yourself, that is! If a whole family is concerned, moving for a job tends to get more complicated, for example:

  • a potential need for other working family members to get a new job, too
  • a new school and a new circle of friends for the child/children
  • a change regarding your system of healthcare providers – not just for you, but also for the rest of the family

This means that the situation of the whole family needs to be taken into consideration.

A few questions to help with the decision-making

  • Do the potential benefits of the relocation outweigh the disadvantages of having to relocate?
  • What is your main motivation for moving for a job: better salary, dream job, promotion/career? Is there a potential local alternative to achieve such a benefit?
  • Do you have a back-up plan in case the new job does not meet your expectations?
  • Do you have the financial means to pay for the initial costs incurred by the relocation? Is there a chance the new employer takes over some of these expenses?
  • What is the job-security with your new position?
  • Is the new salary adequate to the general cost of living in your new location?
  • What benefits does the new location have to offer, aside from the new job?
  • What is the opinion of the other family members?
