Am I Ready to Move Out? – Part 2

You are living with your parents, and sooner or later you will ask yourself: “Am I ready to move out?” We have already written about a few basic calculations to find out whether you can afford to live on your own. Still, the question whether you are ready to live on your own depends on more than just money. Here are some additional considerations for you:

Am I ready to move out?

Your monthly budget might seem sufficient for you to move out from home. Still, this does not mean that you can really afford your own place. You need to come up with the initial costs like:

  • security deposit (if you intend to rent) or even down payment (if you want to buy your new home)
  • furniture beyond that what you used to have in your room at your parent’s house
  • additional electronics and household appliances
  • various other accessories.

Even if you are eager to live independently, the contrast between family life and suddenly living alone can be greater than expected. Family life can have several advantages, even though they might come so naturally that you might not be particularly aware of them:

  • availability of quick support
  • divided household chores (incl. meal cooking etc.)
  • company in general

This of course means in a way that you leave these advantages behind when you move out. Of course, you also have the option of moving in with somebody else: a friend, a group of friends, or perhaps a boyfriend or girlfriend. This means the option of sharing the costs of living, as well as the small daily challenges. In other words, you don’t really need to be without a support network, even though its makeup might change a bit.

When you are ready…
